Recently, we did our 400th performance of "Friends Forever" at Busch Gardens. That means we've performed the same exact show five times a day,
five days a week for over four months. It can become a bit monotonous, and it is a challenge to keep the show fresh for each new audience.
The sheer repetition of the show is the reason that we so savor anything different or unexpected that happens during a performance. At one recent show, an incident occurred that delighted us and brought us much laughter.
Just as the show was starting, Heather, who plays the Princess, realized that she was still wearing her tennis shoes and not her costume shoes.
Unfortunately, I was already onstage awaiting her entrance and she didn't have time to change into her Princess shoes. She'd just have to do the show with the wrong shoes on.
Heather made her entrance, and I noticed that she seemed a bit shaken, but I didn't know why. We made it through the first portion of the show, and I was aware of nothing amiss. Then, at the beginning of our song "Three Is a Magic Number," we bow to each other and, for the first time, I see her feet. And she is not wearing her Princess shoes! She is still in her tennis shoes!
I look up and we make eye contact... and try not to laugh. She knows that I now know that she has the wrong shoes on. We continue with our song. I can hear Heather's voice wavering as she stifles her laughter.
Then we get to one of my lines in the song. I'm supposed to say: "And it takes three wheels to make a vehicle called a tricycle!" If only that's what I actually said! Trying to maintain my own composure, I blurted out "makes" instead of "takes"... and then just couldn't get myself back on track. The line came out something like this instead:
"And it makes gwmkg chl wheels
tma lkl vehicle wmbch dl tricycle!"
Well, as if we didn't already have enough trouble keeping a straight face throughout our show, this blooper made it near impossible. For the remainder of the show, Heather and I couldn't make eye contact with each other for fear of completely losing our cool and collapsing into uncontrollable laughter.
Each of our shows is videotaped, so in between performances, we were able to watch my flubbed lyric over and over again. And each time we watched and heard it, we erupted into fresh laughter that brought tears to our eyes! It was the highlight of our day!
And here, so that you can enjoy it as well, is a video clip from that infamous show:
