Before rehearsals began for my new show at Busch Gardens in Tampa, I was working at my boss Joel's farm in St. Cloud, tending to the many animals he has there.
When many of the performing animals retire from their show biz careers, they go to Joel's farm to relax and play. It is also a place for sick or injured animals to go to recuperate. Sometimes new animals (like General, the dog for my show) start their training at the farm. Joel also has a huge aviary with macaws and cockatoos and other birds that need homes.
For about a month, I drove the 45 minutes from Orlando to
St. Cloud and spent my day feeding and cleaning up after a whole menagerie of animals. And it was a whole day's work!
My day would start by letting the ducks out of their pen to roam about the farm during the day. Then I'd feed the cats
that live on the farm. Next, I would feed the dogs and administer their medications, then I would clean out all of their kennels. I'd feed and clean up after the skunks. I'd feed the parrots in the barn. I'd feed the pig, then the rooster and chickens.
I'd feed the pigeons. Then I'd take a pressure washer and clean the ledges in the pigeon house. By now, it was already lunchtime.
After lunch, I'd feed and clean up after the lizards. Then I'd go out to the big aviary and feed all of the parrots and cockatoos and conures there.
The pig yard and the dogs' play yard needed to be pooper-scoopered. And, before I knew it, it was time to give the dogs their evening medications and diets. Once again, I'd clean their kennels. The ducks would be hanging out outside their house waiting to go back home and be fed. One they were all home again, it was, at last, time to go home. A full days' work!
I didn't mind taking care of all of the animals at the farm, but ultimately, it was not what I returned to Florida to do. I was looking forward to rehearsals for my show to begin and to be performing once again!
