My knee surgery was a success, and I felt great upon returning home. I felt no excessive pain, I had a healthy appetite, and I just felt generally good. And then morning came...
The medication that I had been put on for my surgery had worn off overnight, and my knee hurt beyond belief! I had never felt such pain! I was in agony, and my parents looked on helpless as I suffered.

I had been sent home with several different medications: Cephalixine as an antiobiotic, Etodolac for an anti-inflammatory, and Oxycodone and Morphine for pain relief. Once I got a sufficient amount of the pain relievers in my system, my pain finally subsided some.

My leg was immobilized, wrapped in gauze and bandages and ice and a brace. The few times I had to get out of bed were an intense ordeal.

Several times, when I was so frustrated with the pain and the helplessness, Sarah had to remind me that I and my knee had just been through an invasive and jarring procedure. Of course it was going to hurt, but these were the first steps toward recovery.

So I have been spending a lot of time in bed, surrounded by the essentials: books, television remote control, and Oreos. It is going to be a long time before I am up and about and like my old self again, but I try to remain optimistic and not let it all get to me.

On Monday, July 12, four days after my surgery, I return to the doctor for a follow-up.
